truth time

Top: Lucky Brand (via Marshall's) ~ Skirt: Old Navy (old) ~ Sweater: LOFT (old) ~ Shoes: LifeStride (via DSW) ~ Necklace: Ebay ~ Belt: Hong Kong
I've paired this skirt a number of times with sky high heels that looked awesome and extended my leg line, but the truth is these shoes are what I wear the majority of the time. DC is a commuter city and you know what's not public transportation friendly? High skinny heels.
Still I don't think flat(ish) shoes are the worst thing ever with this skirt so I figured it was time to come clean and show you how it looks :).
weather appropriate style advice
Friday, May 24, 2013 • new, StyleUp
I love how the internet happily provides things I didn't even know I needed. An XOJane article was the first place I read about StyleUp, a kind of outfit 'suggester', where you put in your zip code and it provides weather appropriate outfit ideas for you to consider. From the sounds of it they even provide links for the pieces you might like to buy or suggestions on how you can use what's already in your closet to create a similar look.
With DC's typically schizophrenic weather this sounded just like something I could use, especially in the summer when really all I want to wear is nothing.
At first look (I actually just signed up on Thursday) things appear pretty good. I like (for the most part) the styles they have for me to rate, but I'll continue to update you guys on the usefulness of it all.
But what about you? Do you think this would be useful in your life or just another service to clog up your mail boxes? Let me know and ....

so would you have me in your wedding?
Wednesday, May 22, 2013 • Adrianna Papell, bridesmaid dress, Nine West, OOTD, StellaArborBoutique
As you guys have been with me during the whole 'should I or shouldn't I' journey of bridesmaid dress shopping I figured it was only right that you got to see the final result :).
I can't say it was the easiest thing I've done, finding a dress outside of my usual color palette (taupe is great on my eyes but not much else in my opinion), but I think this Adrianna Papell dress is lovely and pefect for the occasion. I upped the drama with this fabric flower belt from Etsy and feel the overall effect is classy, classic, and definitely appropriate for a summer wedding.
Will I regret the high heels? Maybe. Will I feel beautiful while I'm wearing them? Without a doubt.

bridal makeup test 2 - the winner!

And the winner is....
Light peach-y pink shimmer on the lid!! I'm not sure if it picks up as well on camera but something about these colors just bring out my skin tone and make me feel extra pretty. If you can get your hands on the Little Black Palette from LORAC I highly recommend it - even without a matte blending color the eyeshadows are super pigmented and blend like a dream.

If you live in the DC area and haven't been to Old Town yet I'll tell you right now - you're missing out.Yeah there are tourists and yes some of the vintage shops are infuriatingly overpriced, but the area is just beautiful and perfect for walking around and exploring.
I never fail to find something new or some great piece of architecture or greenery that appeals to me and thankfully I have friend who'll indulge my more 'blogger' moments shall I say?

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 • ASOS, BP, J.Crew, Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, OOTD
Using the most out of what's already in your closet doesn't always have to involve a drastic do-over. Last time this dress was the sole focus of the outfit, accessorized with a couple snake print pieces. Here the dress, still a bit fancy - but still jersey - is complimented by everything else.
The belt serves to delineate the top and bottom halves of me while the jacket makes things a tad more casual. Paired with a chunky necklace and cute shoes I think this would be a great Casual Friday at the office outfit or a weekend out with friends (though maybe one without too much walking).

'natural' makeup: bridal test 1
Monday, May 13, 2013 • Makeup
Makeup Monday has a nice ring to it, so here we go again with another great day look! I'm trying out different combinations for the wedding I'm in next month and this is one of the fore runners. The bride requested 'natural' but as we all know, natural for me (& really for anyone who's about to be in a bunch of pictures) is only so-so natural.
I based this on a technique Emma Pickles shows in one of her more recent tutorials, and the steps are great for a whole bunch of different colors. I upped the ante slightly by highlighting under my brow with a bit of concealer and matte eyeshadow but this is a fun, fast look for everyday.

I feel like it's rare now a days to find pieces I like at Macy's. Maybe it's just the stores available to me in the DC area, but it seems like the options are both piecemeal and out of my age range. But when armed with a coupon I'm willing to take the time for in depth searches and yesterday I happened upon this dress, perfect for life, work, and sorority functions!
And it's on sale!

TGIF my friends, it's time for a weekend of volunteering & relaxing. And Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there - I hope you're celebrating in style :).
One of my favorite purchases from last year, this cute little H&M blazer still makes me happy. The burgundy color, black suede accents, and flared back make it a fun and flattering piece, whether I'm wearing it in the Fall or Spring.

Janelle Monae "Q.U.E.E.N." makeup
Monday, May 6, 2013 • Makeup
I can't say I'm the biggest fan of Monae's sound, call me a plebeian I don't mind, but the makeup and fashion choices in her latest video were fantastic. The thick liner, red orange-y lip, and bold lashes were fun and not the hardest thing to recreate.
And now for my take....
I can only go off the screen shots but I'd say I'm pretty close. I used a combination of shadows on the lid to get something satiny but not glittery and gel liner set with powder for a full lash line. Looking at it now I would say the liner could be thicker but my eyes are pretty big anyway so I was worried that to make the liner thicker across the top would make my eyes look like circles. Oh well - next time!
For the face the goal was 'flawless' skin with plenty of contouring and a bright blush. All of the browns used on Monae's face (both in the crease of her eyes and under her cheekbone) looked cool toned to me so I pulled out my rarely used MAC Sculpt and Shape and I think it did a pretty good job giving me the effect I was after.
It's pretty gloomy here in DC but I hope all of you are having the best Monday possible!

Friday, May 3, 2013 • JC Penny, LOFT, Old Navy, OOTD, Steve Madden
I have to admit that sometimes even I don't realize how much the blogs I read inspire me. Originally I was just trying to magic up an outfit that made pleather peplum appropriate for day, but I settled on a combo that looks a lot like Cee! It's nice to know that the hours I spend looking at what other people are wearing actually does help me figure out what to wear myself.
