What to Wear: for Halloween!
Thursday, October 31, 2013 • Dragon*Con, What to Wear
Debuted at DragonCon 2013, I wore this with sneakers at the convention because honestly I would have killed myself otherwise. I managed to fumble around in the parking garage behind my apartment but make no mistake: I am not a professional skater and these pictures make me look much better than I am.
I love this costume because not only is it a take on a woman and character I admire but it incorporates another badass sport I'll never be able to do, roller derby. Throw in the fact that it's also a geeky homage and I think we can all agree that despite the cold risk it's a costume worth the commitment.
Don't forget to check the link up on Gyspy in Jasper for other great looks (& perhaps future Halloween inspiration?)!

It feels like DC might be breezing right through any temperate Fall days so who knows how long I'll have left to wear this blazer - I still love it though!

Geek of the Week #18
Friday, October 25, 2013 • Geek of the Week
It's time for a ~*SPOOKY*~ Halloween Edition of Geek of the Week!
1. My Drunk Kitchen is a fantastic YouTube show (in case you didn't know) where Hannah Hart hangs out with friends, gets drunk, and cooks various dishes without using any utensils that could actually hurt anyone, lol. She has a couple Halloween episodes though that totally take the cake:
2. I love the fact that Halloween is a 'do what speaks to you' holiday when it comes to fashion, but this skirt is something I'd wear in months other than just October!
3. Nail art has become more of thing to me lately, in fact my polish collection is officially larger than my best friend's, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do to commemorate the holiday. Here are a couple looks to get you inspired, one easy and one totally out of this world (though with the help of a stamping plate perhaps not impossible, lol).

(a friend shared this with me on Facebook & I can't find the origin - sorry!)

4. I rarely buy costumes in full online any more, mostly because I'm cheap, but Lesley over at xoJane has an excellent collection of the most mind numbingly ridiculous in her article "An Incomplete Compendium Of Horrors: 12 “Sexy” Halloween Costumes For Things That Probably Shouldn’t Be Sexy". Two of my faves? "Sriracha" & "Sexy Rick Grimes" (who thinks of these things?!).
5. To finish up this 'frightening' Halloween post I thought I'd end with the most terrifying of all creatures: PUGS!

Not very rocker I'm afraid but hey, it'll do for cloudy Fall weather. Anyway the real purpose of this post is the gates - aren't they beautiful?!

As you can see, almost overwhelming I have one thing on the brain: cobalt. And yes, a couple of these skirts are complete fantasy (Oscar de la Renta? HAH!), but I like to remind myself of the overall shape and color of what I'm looking for to help my 'shopping with purpose' goal.
The mustard is just an extra ;).

What to Wear: to the movies
Wednesday, October 16, 2013 • ASOS, Georgetown Leather Design, J.Crew, Michael Kors, Old Navy, OOTD, The Limited, What to Wear
For me going to the movies is all about layers. Summer or Fall the temperature inside a theater often hovers right around arctic so this blazer and gingham button down are perfect. Plus if for some reason I do get hot then I can take a layer off and still be ok. Add in comfy burgundy jeans, oxfords, and a sizeable crossbody and I've even got a way to sneak in candy!
Check back tomorrow for Gypsy in Jasper's link to all the 'What to Wear' posts!

Fitting Room Review: Anthropologie
Thursday, October 10, 2013 • Anthropologie, review, window shopping
Omg I stepped into a store! And tried on clothes! And took pictures! Shock and awe.
Ponte Bell Skirt, $128 (Sz M/L)
Checking online this skirt comes in a variety of colors but I don't think any of them would fix the fit problems. I understand it's meant to be high waisted, I like it that way in fact, but why is the waistband so long? For the skirt to actually poof nicely over my hips the top has to be all up under the boob area and it ends up looking very awkward.
Merida Pencil Skirt, $168 (Sz 12)
Cute but the size 12 was a bit too tight for my liking. I'd also never spend this much on a skirt so lets hope it sticks around long enough in a size 14 once it's on sale!
Marigold Swing Coat, $148 (Sz 12)
I actually was surprised by how much I liked this coat. I don't traditionally dig the swing coat fit but I liked the 3/4 length sleeve with the boxier shape. Would I buy it at this price? No, sorry, out of the budget, but it's another one to check back up on later!

I stumbled upon something surprisingly hard with this outfit, namely an ISO level that doesn't want to act right when I'm wearing a light colored dress in the shade, so please excuse the slight overcastness of this post.

What to Wear: polka dots
Wednesday, October 2, 2013 • eShakti, Gap, Old Navy, OOTD, Tahari, What to Wear
Polka dots! It's a pattern I love which is all over my closet so it was actually kind of hard to pick just one piece for Gypsy in Jasper's 'What to Wear' theme. Still I think this outfit is pretty nicely 'me' what with the skirt and bright colors. Gypsy's link up post should go live tomorrow (Thurs) so check back here to find out what the other participants wore!
Edit: And here's the post! Enjoy all the polka dotty goodness :).
I've also just done some backtracking and I think this lovely logo is care of Little Lady Little City - so cute!

A Quiz Meme (via little chief honeybee)
Tuesday, October 1, 2013
Well since Blogger's being a poo poo head (thanks for NOTHING Google. Aren't I being punished enough by the government shutdown?), I thought I'd try for something semi-productive and do the quiz meme that Kaelah just posted on her blog.
1. What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
I don't like eating/drinking first thing in the morning so instead I wash my face and apply sunscreen/moisturizer so that it can soak in before I put on makeup for the day.
2. What is the 3rd picture on your phone? Share it!
I was playing around with Halloween makeup on Sunday so my 3rd picture is an outtake from that (Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas but with purple hair).
3. What TV show are you most excited about returning this Fall?
I'm actually not watching anything returning this Fall but I had a lot of fun watching the first episode of Agents of Shield and would like to get into The Blacklist.
4. What is something really popular that you secretly (or not so secretly) loathe?
Hmm I guess 50 Shades is too easy right? Well due to all the popularity turning me off (you HAVE to love these!) I haven't read any of the Hunger Games series and don't plan on watching any of the movies.
5. Do you have any pets? Tell us about them! Bonus points for pictures.
I don't have any pets! It's so sad and I hope to change that soon(ish(). If life was perfect I'd have a cutie just like this one I spotted at the Barracks Row Festival!
6. If you could put together one outfit that represents you perfectly, what would it be?
Hmm, a hard question. My style is consistent and yet eclectic, so I'd say to be perfect it'd either have to be a full a line skirt with a button up top and chunky necklace, or skinny jeans tucked into riding boots with a button up top under a crew neck sweater (with a sparkly necklace).
7. What is your favorite adult beverage?
Rum with pineapple and cranberry juice (a rum Bay Breeze from what I was told).
8. What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
Childrens cartoons, hands down. There might be an issue with how much I love Disney Jr., but when I need perfectly forgettable background noise it always hits the spot.
9. What are 3 positive words to describe you?
Committed, Creative, and a Survivor.
10. What is your favorite Friday afternoon/evening activity?
Happy Hour! There's something to be said for just going home and kicking back but when I'm in the mood there's nothing better than cheap eats and drinks with my friends.
11. A day in the life: What does you typical day look like?
Probably pretty boring for most of you :-/. I'm up at 7am, washing my face and getting ready for the day. I work in an office that opens at 8:30am and after arriving I spend the next hours problem fixing for a variety of companies in my suite. Lately it's all been kitchen sink and dishwasher related so I don't think I'll be talking up its good points any time soon.
12. If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be?
I actually don't know! I haven't traveled a lot and would want to spend some more time (or any time) further up in the NE United States before making a decision (though I loved Hong Kong when I was there - it's just super far away from all my friends!).
13. You've got a whole day to yourself...what will you do?
While I'd love to say I'd sleep away the day and enjoy doing nothing, I'm actually kind of bad at just staying in the house. I like to be outside enjoying the weather (especially in the Fall) so if I could get up late morning, make myself a nice breakfast, and head out into the city that would be wonderful. Especially if there were some farmer's markets or cultural festivals going on that I could immerse myself in.
14. Dream job?
Don't know again I'm afraid. There's nothing that calls out to me enough that I could say definitively 'this is it'. I like books, clothes, makeup, and people, and strangely more than one person lately has told me I should be a stylist. Shrug.
15. Least favorite chore?
Laundry. Blech.
16. When do you most feel like a rock star?
Maybe when everything's running smoothly? I'm juggling a lot of balls but when things are going well at both of my jobs and people are happy then I'm happy. Especially when I feel like it's something that only I personally could have done in that particular way.
17. What is something you are currently trying to improve within yourself?
Saying no. I don't want to let people down and am always willing to lend a hand even when it's detrimental to my mental state. Sometimes other people will have to pick up the slack and I'm going to have to let them because it can't always be me.
Bonus:
A picture of my neighborhood shenanigans! DC can take a lot of flack for being so city and not very homey (I'm from NC so it's not like I'm exempt from making this criticism) but SW and around Eastern Market are some of my favorite places and I love hanging out with the local flavor.
