inconsistency thy name is (the TLC show) 'big sexy'
Wednesday, August 31, 2011
In case you don't watch the freakshow channel quite as often as I do, last night TLC debuted their new show Big Sexy:
First with the quick and dirty:
1) Audrey is definitely my favorite. That woman is FIERCE and while I'm not cool or avant garde enough to wear those clothes, I love the fact that she does.
2) Audrey is followed closely by the gal who works at (or owns? I wasn't sure) Re/Dress and the woman who's started a company doing swimsuits and bras for those blessed with a bigger bust.
3) This show is really either a Hills or a Sex and the City starring plus size gals. Which is SO not clear in the intro, so I feel cheated by the little to no attention paid on the fashion or makeup.
4) Hide and seek vajazzle. For reals. It was one of the best scenes of the entire show and I'd almost say watch it just for that.
After watching Big Sexy last night I have to say that I don't think this is going to be something I follow on a regular basis. The promo set it up as starring plus size women working in or amidst the fashion industry and ultimately that's what I thought it was going to be about - the plus size fashion industry. Instead it's really the same kind of semi-reality show that they're putting up on every other channel. The first episode may have ended with a catwalk, but 90% of the show focused on the girls' personal lives, speed dating, chubby chaser bars, ex-boyfriends telling them they were a 'stalker'....I blahhed at the whole thing because unfortunately for TLC (and I guess myself) I don't care about any of that. All I wanted to see was a show about confident big women who worked in the fashion industry doing their stuff. I wanted to see racks of clothes and makeup tests and photoshoots, and... and.... and just more!
Considering all that the fact that they were inconsistent with their message of body acceptance isn't too much of a stretch. Instead of portraying women clearly in love with their bodies and how their bodies looked, we got maybe 1 or 2 who felt that way and everyone else had doubts and worries about how attractive they were, or had a body part (stomach, thighs, what have you) that they didn't like about themselves. The Re/Dress woman (I'm sorry that I can't remember her name) though, from the beginning to the end of episode, was happy with her body and determined to make sure that the woman around her knew she felt the same about theirs. I did like that part.
Maybe I'm just being unrealistic. Maybe all the shows in this vein are going to show women (of all shapes and sizes) concerned about how their body looks and if they'll ever find love. But it's not what I wanted for Big Sexy, and I have to give the whole thing an 'eh' for experience.

thoughts on a masquerade

What to wear behind my mask at the Masquerade Ball was another conundrum I had with Dragon*Con. With the limitations there was only going to be so much I'd be able to show and have an impact, which forced me to try another trick I'd seen a guru use. Sparkle!
I applied the gems with lash glue to the top and bottom of my eyes and I have to admit I love it. It's just so different from what I usually do and provides just the right amount of pop. The eyeshadow underneath is actually not that difficult, with a transition between gold-silver-gold and on the lid with dark browns to shape the crease and outer 'V'.

toxic pinup
Thursday, August 25, 2011 • Makeup
And the testing for Dragon*Con continues! At this point (9 DAYS AWAY!) I've actually manage to narrow down all my outfits and not feel completely freaked out. I will be busy though as for the first two days I have 2 completely different outfits and makeup to wear.
Finally I can at least say I have a look for my first pinup outfit! Again I was inspired from various YouTube videos and I actually pulled this together with makeup I already had - no new stuff necessary! If you're OCD like me you can see the shading is a little off from one side to the other, but as this was the first time I'd ever done the look I'm not too concerned about evening everything out the day of.
My only real concern is that that (and I acknowledge it could be my camera) it doesn't seem to show up bright and pigmented in the farther away pictures. All I can really discern is the general shape given by the darkest contour color, but ideally everything would pop equally.
Hope you like it!

Please ignore the very subpar application. Focus more on how pretty and shiny it is, please?
If you want to get this look yourself here are the products I used:
(Oh and I got the L.A. Girls products from a beauty supply store in Wheaton - I'm not sure where else you can get it. Sorry!)

essie first base base coat ~ L.A. Girls Calcium Builder ~ American Apparel Nail Lacquer in Mouse ~ Orly nail polish in Wandering Vine ~ L.A. Girls Diamond Top Coat
I'm not sure if it's the actual colored polish itself, but the last time I did my nails with these bases and an American Apparel creme it lasted almost a full 2 weeks without chipping. The only wear I saw was at the base of my nails where I was growing it out. Growing it out! I haven't done that in forever because most of my nail polishes either show tip wear or a chip in a day or two. I used one thin coat of the Essie followed by one thin coat of the calcium builder. I let everything dry and then do two thin coats of color and then one final coat of the top coat.

H&M and their personal vendetta
Tuesday, August 23, 2011
I can't remember if I've talked about this already or not, but H&M hates me. I don't know what I did but almost nothing in that store ever fits and when it does go on it looks so wonky that I can't even remember why I was moved to try it. PLUS that store seems to think that my ribs are optional and can be removed whenever they deem necessary.
Does anybody else see something wrong with this picture?
Still with a 20% off coupon (you can get one too by signing up for their newsletter) I thought I'd give it another go.The results were, as usual, hit and miss.
*All dresses were are size 14.
**I'm pretty sure all these dresses were $34.95.
I wanted this dress to fit SO badly but damn you H&M! I could zip it up over my ribs (though it was very tight) but it was a total no go over the bust. The material has almost no stretch and when the roomie and I tried to force it all of a sudden I had weird uni-boob. But if you're a little smaller than me all over this is a beautiful dress with a great A-line. Plus the mesh was just opaque enough not to show the straps of my nude bra through it.
You probably won't believe me, but this is the dress I ended up buying. But wait! I'm wearing it here with my belt and it at least gives you an idea of how I'm going to style it. I think it's going to be a great transitional dress from summer to fall, as with the loose swingy skirt it'll look wonderful with tights and boots. First thing though is I'm going to remove that heinous lace insert and pin up the v-neck from the base to make it a slightly shorter. I'd wear this with a black tank top - or in the winter - can't you just see it with a black turtle neck?! Love.
There was another dusky purple dress I tried on that for some reason I didn't take a picture of, and a green wrap dress that did not fit at ALL, but that's pretty much it. Here's hoping my failures leads to success for you!

I liked this lace dress a lot - the grey more than the all black - but there were just too many small things that irked me. The stretch in the material meant in fit in the bust but by that same token the dress itself became too short. Instead of being a cute, fitting closer to the body work dress, my proportions were thrown off and it just wasn't as flattering as it could have been.

(yes this is a pic from my bathroom)
Of what will be debuted at Dragon*Con 2011 (I wrote a slightly epic post over on Reading Amidst the Chaos, but since it includes a video of Brent Spinner I really think you should check it out). I'm a little concerned because my harem pants make me feel like an elephant, but I'm hoping that once I'm together with a whole group of people all dressed to the same Rainbow Brite theme I won't feel so ridiculous.
Also I've given in and like the lemming I am taken the plunge. I am on the Twitter. You can follow me @goodredherring for some lovely fashion/makeup/dragon*con/geek randomness. I make no promises though, we'll see how this goes o_O
I question how good an idea it is to make another Underworld movie

And is anyone else getting flashbacks to Resident Evil? I feel like we did the whole kidnapped, frozen, wake up and kick some ass stuff already.
Well I don't have an Awkward and Awesome to share with you guys today but I thought my own personal shopping dilemma would do in a pinch!
Jeans - love them or hate them they're a staple in pretty much everyone's closet. I in no way need any more of these but I keep obsessing over a couple. One pair I was actually able to try on and the other just one I've seen modeled on so many bloggers that I can't help but lust after them.
The ones I tried on:
I was surprisingly unhorrified with how they looked on, even tucked in, and I loved just how wide the wide legs were. Can't you just see them with platforms? I definitely can.
I do have to admit though that they were really long, I mean a good 4-5 inches too long, which was a bit surprising considering I was trying on the regular length.
The ones I wish I'd be able to try on:
I want to love these on me but without seeing how the pants fit in the hip and thigh I just can't say. The bloggers I've seen wear them, even though they're women I love, are quite smaller than I so I'm not able to judge the fit at all.
And now I'm even sadder because they USED to be on sale. $20 off still made them more than I want to pay for jeans but dammit now they're even more expensive!
There is much sadness in the House of Dana (at least until I find a coupon - then maybe things will get better).

D*C Round 2
Tuesday, August 16, 2011
Uhh so I realize that I just posted about my last Dragon*Con makeup test but just stay with me. The time is rapidly approaching and I've gotta get it done somehow - plus you're all not totally turned off by this right? RIGHT?
Sadly these pictures are still suffering from bad light syndrome but I just don't know how to fix it. Sorry my camera short comings are becoming so obvious, but hopefully through trial and error I'll get better.
This look is based off MissChievous's video and three things 1) her eyes are WAAY different than mine. I don't have as much space under the brow bone to bring color, 2) she also owns the eyeshadow Makeup Forever #92 which I want so BADLY, and 3) she's just a much better artist ok? I do what I can!

I'm attempting to use Flickr to make these photos show up a bit better, but apparently the new annoyance is going to be sizing. I don't want to do Wordpress dammit! I like Blogger.
Except when it sucks.
And I know that it's Thursday and I'm not seemingly going to pull an Awkward & Awesome post out of my hat, but unfortunately life sometimes goes that way. How about I give you one of each to make up for it?
Awkward
-I HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE WHAT TO DO ABOUT MY DRAGON*CON MAKEUP AND MY INDIGO COSTUME MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A FAT LOSER.
Yeah you might be able to see a bit of my stress level right there. It's not pretty, especially when combined with the eye twitch from hell (that refuses to go away).
Awesome
-Uhhh this one song by 2NE1? I'll even give you a two-fer and say the $24 dress I got at the Salvation Army was pretty fantastic too.
and it begins...dragon*con makeup test 1
Wednesday, August 10, 2011 • Makeup
First, sorry these pictures suck. For the life of me I cannot get my camera to take good close up shots when it's not day outside. You can imagine how annoying that is when the best time for me to play around with makeup is when I get home from work! Does this mean I need to invest in lighting or something? Grr.
Also, as I apologize again, sorry for no product description. It was a matte from my Tarte holiday kit all over the lid and mostly a mix of MAC's Sketch and Fig. 1 in the crease. I was inspired from this pin-up picture I saw online but as mine is a sad, sad, recreation of it, I will not be sharing it with you. Why point out how bleh this came out? :-/
Stupid Dragon*Con makeup! Why are you always the bane of my existence?!

Movie Review - The Day the Earth Stood Still
Friday, August 5, 2011
Dr. Helen Benson is summoned to a military facility with several other scientist when an alien spacecraft of sorts arrives in New York City. Aboard is a human-like alien and a giant robot of immense size and power. The alien identifies himself as Klaatu and says he has come to save the Earth. The US military and political authorities see him as a threat however and decide to use so-called intensive interrogation techniques on him but Dr. Benson decides to facilitate his escape. When she learns exactly what he means when he says he is there to save the Earth, she tries to convince him to change his intentions.
~~
After finally seeing this movie on TV the other night I can't believe all the flack it got! Roomie and I both enjoyed it, though admittedly we are both fans of Keanu Reeves, but still - come on now! It was an interesting movie set to show viewers what could happen if another race decided to defend the Earth from us. I wouldn't say it's perfect, I wanted to smack little Jaden Smith a time or two, but on the whole it was really entertaining. Keanu does what he does best and is very convincing at it. Even when he's horrifying Jaden and definitely sending his butt to the therapy I can't say it seemed as if he was acting out of character.
I would say for me this is another case of I just don't know what people were expecting. The very premise of this movie wasn't exactly very original, especially considering that it's a remake of a much older film, but it's entertaining. The visuals were good, the special effects weren't distracting, and in the end I thought both humanity and Klaatu made believable amounts of growth.
(Just as an aside, the ending totally reminded me of Escape from L.A., which until Googling it just now, I never realized was a sequel.)
Awkward and Awesome (8/4)
Thursday, August 4, 2011 • Awkward and Awesome
Awesome
-New lipgloss! I've never tried a Giorgio Armani one before, but first thoughts are very positive.
-There's going to be a masked ball at Dragon*Con and I just can't get over how cool I think that is.
-Cowboys & Aliens. Ok Daniel Craig, you've got me - I LOVED this movie!
-Slightly expensive face creams. I know I don't NEED it but I love it just the same.
Awkward
-Women who just stand there and chat in the bathroom - or bring their cups in with them. Ick.
-Having a nail break start really far down, ruining my chances of growing them out.
-Can I put Dragon*Con under awkward too? As excited as I am about it, hotel stress and outfit concerns combined with makeup confusion is leaving me a little stressed. Dammit. I don't want to be the one person who fails at life!
BDIB: Arm Party
Wednesday, August 3, 2011 • BDIB
I would have done some much better if this had been an eye candy or ear candy (ear candy? yeah that doesn't sound right) challenge. I just don't stack bracelets much, and I don't have a lot of options to choose from because I'm much more of an earrings kinda girl. I'm gradually introducing more necklaces into my accessories wardrobe, but bracelets - especially groups of them - are not my forte.
All this is leading up to me asking you not to hate me too much for the fact that only some of this arm candy actually belongs to me. It's about half & half my roommate's and I can't tell you where she got any of it. Sorry!
And you probably noticed that I skipped over the maxi skirt BDIB Challenge.1 - I actually don't own a maxi skirt, and 2 - the last time I tried to make that work with one of my maxi dresses it was just a great big disaster. I think this challenge went moderately well but to check out some amazing examples of arm candy, go over to Pretty Shiny Sparkly's round-up post!

Geek of the Week #2
Tuesday, August 2, 2011 • Geek of the Week
1) 30 Days til Dragon*Con!
I just can't explain to you how excited I am for this. After weeks of hotel mix up HELL, my room in the Maririott is confirmed at a price that won't bankrupt me. AND I have outfits, shoes, jewelry galore to go with the weekend, though at this point I should really start thinking seriously about the makeup.
2) And at Dragon*Con? They're having a MASKED BALL. I have no idea how I'm going to make another outfit happen but it has to happen.
I'm 25, Dragon*Con's 25, this whole thing is just going to be epic! Of course finding out about this just yesterday means I have nothing to wear but with the strength of Goodwill and DC thrift stores behind me I'm determined to persevere!
3) Buffy's Back! (well ok not really)
Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to TV this fall with the show Ringer, which will (unfortunately) air on the CW. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. From the preview below it could be great it could be really really bad, so I think I'll try to just hold my opinion about this one and see what it's like.
4) In time?
I need to get off the Justin Timberlake bandwagon, but I just can't seem to help myself. By the end of the preview I was more than ready to put down my $11. Plus it has Amanda Seyfried! I love her (in Jennifer's Body though, not Red Riding Hood. That movie was poop.).
5) Jeri Ryan on Warehouse 13
One of my favorite characters from Star Trek: Voyager. It makes me wish I was even a little familiar with the show!
6) Did you know there are two Dracula 2000 sequels? Cause there totally are.
If you were looking for some titles to add to your list for bad movie night have I got a couple for you! Dracula 2000 was my first exposure to Gerard Butler on screen (and I'm still proud that in 8th grade I was the only one of my friends not carded for the rated R movie) but I couldn't believe when I found out there were TWO sequels! Thank you free Comcast movies, thank you.
Guys I can't even tell you, they're so bad and so good at the same time. The second is definitely better than the third, I think they tried to take themselves too seriously in that one, but the third has Rutgar Hauer (of Buffy movie Dracula fame) playing Dracula again! Please if you haven't already watched these run to your nearest movie rental location, if nothing else so you can appreciate how the second movie had to completely ignore the ending of Dracula 2000 in order to have the plot make any sense.
7) Le Roi Soleil
This is a French musical. With beautiful people singing beautiful music. Don't miss out :)
